Food Processing - MAKHANA / Makhane (GORGON NUT)

Gorgon nut or fox nut, commonly known as makhana (in Hindi) is a high value commodity.
Bihar is the major state producing makhana (gorgon nut) commercially. It produces more than 90% production of the nut in the country, with major producing districts being Darbhanga, Madhubani, Purnea and Katihar.
This highly nutritious crop is traditionally used in roasted form as snack and for kheer (sweet dish of rice) making.
They are also known as Lotus seeds.
100 gm makhana contains 14% proteins, 79% carbohydrates, Iron, Phosphorous and zinc.

Advantages:

2. It helps in building action in dysentery, frequent urination.
3. Act as an anti-oxidant.
4. It is digestive for all age groups.  Due to its astringent property, it is relieves one from diarrhea and helps improve appetite.
5. 25 gram makhana a day means a healthy food/diet for the whole family.
 6.It  regulates blood pressure, relieves numbness and aching near waist and knees.
7. It is suitable for arthritis, impotence and permature aging .
8.They are sweet to neutral in nature. They help to detoxify the spleen, reinforce the kidneys and nourish the blood.

Makhane are obtained from the plant Euryale ferox which is grown in water. 

It produced white seeds which on roasted gets big and round (like a popcorn)
